The Story of Homeopathy!

SAMUEL CHRISTIAN HAHNEMANN

The story of homoeopathy begins with SAMUEL CHRISTIAN HAHNEMANN (1755-1843). He was an orthodoxy qualified German physician, who became dissatisfied with the medical practices of his day, which consisted large doses of drugs. He therefore looked for alternative forms of treatment that would be better but for a long time he was unsuccessful and for many years he abandoned the practice of medicine altogether. Towards the end of 18th century, however, he conducted an experiment on himself, he took some cinchona bark (quinine) to see what would happen. To his surprise, he experienced for a few hours, the symptoms of Malaria, perhaps he thought, quinine cures Malaria because it can produce the symptoms of Malaria in a healthy person. The idea was the germ of homoeopathy.

The principle of the medicine

The principle of the medicine is given by DR. SAMUEL HAHNEMANN, and is derived from a Greek word ‘Homoeos’= similar and ‘Pathos’= suffering. This is based on the principle- ‘SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURRENTUR’ – which also means ‘like cures likes’. An illness is treated with the medicine, which would produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. The active ingredients are given in a highly dilute form to avoid toxicity, which means that homeopathic remedies are extremely safe. The principle is not new as it was known to the ancient Indian physicians and is mentioned in the Vedas also.

System

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses natural substance mostly derived from plants, mineral and animal kingdom. Metals like Gold, Silver, Platinum and minerals like Sulphur, Arsenic and Antimony have all been made to serve the mission of homoeopathy. Substances available in the plants, mineral or animal kingdoms have been transformed by potentisation into invaluable medicines for acute as well as chronic problems. Remedies are prescribed in different potencies (or strengths). Remedies may be given in the liquid form or in the form of powders or pills.

Self Healing

A homoeopathic medicine acts as a signal that energizes or stimulates the body’s self-healing powers mobilizing the defense system and working on metal, emotional and physical aspects of the body.
